This information is for Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10 based laptops. What do I do if I am not able to charge my laptop battery when the power adapter plugged in (laptop battery not charging problem). Sometimes, with a good battery and a good power adapter, your laptop won’t charge battery. This method does not work for all battery not charging issues, but please try to follow the following instructions to fix your charging issue. If this method does not work, you should try to replace your laptop battery or your power adapter.
HOW TO FIX THE BATTERY NOT CHARGING PROBLEM: (For all Windows based laptops)
1. Please go to “Control Panel” Click the start button, then locate the Control Panel. For Windows 8 and up, please move your mouse cursor to the left bottom edge, then do a right click. This will bring up a menu. Please locate Control Panel, and click. (In Windows 10, just type “Control Panel” in Windows 10 search bar, then click “Control Panel”.)
2. If your control panel does not look same as the picture above, please change your control panel view to “Classic View” or “Small Icons”.
3. Find and click “System” then please locate “Device Manager”. For Windos XP, please locate a menu tab titled “Hardware” and click it. Under the Hardware menu, you will see the Device Manager. For Windows Vista, 7, 8, and 10 please click the “Device Manager” on the left side menu.
4. Please click “Battery” and under Battery, please click “Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery”. Now, do a right click on it, then click “Uninstall”. Confirm that you would like to uninstall the Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery.
5. After the uninstallation process, please restart your computer.
6. As soon as you restart your computer, the Windows will automatically install the driver again. Please check your battery icon on the right bottom side of your Windows screen to see if it is charging.
1. WHAT TO DO IF THE METHOD DID NOT WORK FOR YOU? – Removing the battery and reinstalling resolve the battery not charging problem sometimes. Try it.
Try to remove the actual laptop battery, and then re-install the battery. Sometimes, it fixes this issue. If you have internal battery, you will need to disassemble your laptop to disconnect the battery from your laptop.
2. WHAT TO DO IF THE METHOD DID NOT WORK FOR YOU? – Drain your laptop battery
1. The above methods did not work for you? Here is one more thing you can try. Please drain your laptop battery perfectly and then try again.
2. Do not know how to drain your laptop battery ? Unplug your power adapter first. Only with your battery power, simply by using your laptop until the computer shutdown and won’t turn on. You will need to drain the battery perfectly. If your laptop keep turns on, leave the laptop for a while until your laptop does not even turn on.
3. Laptop battery is drained ? Plug in your power adapter and start to charge the battery, then turn on your laptop to see if it starts to charge.
STILL HAVE NOT CHARGING BATTERY PROBLEM ?
Consider replacing your laptop battery or your laptop power adapter.
1. When your laptop battery is dead or when your laptop power supply does not provide right power, this can happen. Please consider replacing the battery or the power adapter for your laptop.

Hi. Help me pls how to fix my laptop? It says 70% available (plugged in, not charging) what would i do? My laptop is hp windows 8. I need ur answer now pls? 🙁 thanks!
when i unplug my my ac adapter from my laptop it automatically shuts down my laptop and it does not let me drain the battery. do you know how to fix the problem? It would be highly appreciated.
Oh and its a windows 7 MSI laptop. and it says 0% available(plugged in, not charging)
Is it old laptop ? Sounds like your bettery isn’t charging because the laptop battery is dead.
I’m having the same problem , but my Acer Aspire is only a few months old …
A friend brought over her 6 month old Aspire e 15 . The charger had quit and she bought a replacement Targus universal charger which also soon quit.
I now have both her original charger and the Targus working properly. On checking the DC out put using a multimeter the Targus produced 19.2 volts. After several other investigations I noticed that the male positive pin on the Acer body was smaller in diameter than the female port on the charger out put cord . However the that female port in addition to being round had 2 horizontally opposite tiny slots each with a metal pin intended to make contact with the male laptop pin. This explained why wiggling the plug had produced intermittent charging and the multimeter tapered point test pin had made satisfactory contact. Using a small sewing needle I was able to release the two pins from their slots and plugged the Targus back in and had perfect contact with no wiggling needed. I then investigated the original Acer charger and applied the same fix and the computer is now charged up on that device .The remaining issue is to figure out how to prevent these pins from bending too far back into the plastic slot later on .
A flashlight and perhaps a magnifying glass might be needed to find what I found. I then looked into my own Toshiba charger plug in and realized it has a similar contact system that has never failed in 10 years.
Installing a new plug on the Acer laptop would have been a fool’s errand.
PandTBro,
Or, could it be the cable from power source to adapter is okay, so pc is “plugged in”, but part from adapter (what some call the brick in the middle) to battery is deactivated due to faulty adapter (like from dropping it too many times)
I also have the problen same as with you. Please help us! 😵
I am using acer v5 aspire windows8.1. Now my battary not charging it is rapidly changing “plugged in not charging and pluged in charging what should I do?
Have you tried the methods above ?
Suraj,
Phone ACER and demand a replacement power cord & adapter (BOTH parts of the power supply). If you are out of warranty, buy a replacement (read the voltage etc label!) from Walmart & return it for refund if it does not fix your Acer power problem (which it will).
This is interesting. I uninstalled the acpi in device manager and now my laptop will not even boot up? Whats next, have a bad feeling. Tia
What laptop and Windows do you have ?
In that case,
1. Turn on your computer
2. Before the Windows logo apears, rapidly press F8 key.
3. This will show you advanced boot options.
4. Choose “Last Known Good Configuration”.
5. This will bring your computer back to the time before you remove the ACPI.
Thanks for the response. I took my battery completely out, plugged it in, and was able to get it to boot up. Laptop will not even boot up now with old or replacement battery attached. I looked at the device Mgr and the two acpi’s have reinstalled themselves as you said they would. Its a windows 7 core I7 HP.
Hello. I have a HP Pavilion 15-n066us running on windows 8.1. I’ve had the computer for about a year and a half now. The original battery stopped working at 2% “Plugged in, not charging”. I uninstalled “Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery”. I even uninstalled “Microsoft AC Adapter”. Nothing worked. The computer does NOT say “Consider getting a new battery”. I got a new battery. Two days later, my computer will not turn on unless the AC adapter is plugged in. I did the previous method. Still doesnt work. The adapter has to fine considering that’s how my computer turns on, and it charged the new battery. The new battery is at 100% “Fully charged (100%)”. As soon as I unplug it, the computer turns off. I checked other forums and updated my computer. Cannot find any resolutions. Please help. This is very frustrating.
First of all, let’s find out if your battery is good. Google “hwmonitor” and download the program. This is a computer monitoring software which shows you how much battery power you have. Run the program and check full charge capacity and current capacity.
I have HP Pavilion dv7. My laptop sometimes remain running after I close the lid. So battery runs completely flat. After several such cases my laptop doesn’t even start with the battery plugged-in. So I had to remove the battery to start the laptop. I inserted battery after laptop started, followed this instruction and now battery works. Thanks for the article.
Can you Help me pls! I have Laptop: Samsung windows 7. It’s says 1% available (plugged in, not charging) what would I do? I tried your all method but it’s still no charging. This was a first problem.
The second, I’ve another laptop: Samsung windows 7. It was charge only with adapter with out battery so when I tried your first method it’s worked but the battery is stay only half a hour or less then should I charge it again, What’s the solution for that ?
Thanks.
The uninstall & reinstall method did not work for me. Unplugging the laptop/notebook and letting the battery drain with computer turned on did. However, I did not have to go to the extreme of a complete drain. When it said 88% remaining, I put the power plug back in and it started recharging; eventually went up to “fully charged” 100%.
I have an Acer Aspire and the OS is Windows Vista Home Edition.
P.S.: My logic tells me that the driver software must have a margin of calculated depletion during which recharging will not activate. Mine seems to kick in around 10% (when less than 90% available)
Correction, my OS is Windows 8.1 on the Acer, not Vista.
did not work at all i have dell with windows 8 pro
Thanks for tip on battery not charging even with a good adopter it has worked perfectly my laptop is now charging
Please help. I have a Windows Vista Home Edition Sony Vaio laptop VGN-CR42Z laptop and have obtained a non-oem replacement battery for it. The laptop works fine when just poweed with the power cable and no battery, but with the new battery in place the system tray recognizes the battery is in with the battery registering 0% (plugged in, charging) but after several hours the battery is not charging. I have tried removing the ‘Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery’, but this has not helped at all. Incidentally, the original battery was a VGP-BPS9/S 11.1V 4800mAh and the replacement batery is VGP-BPS9A/S. The replacement battery did show it was charging for about a second then stopped. Can you help please as I am at my wits end?
Are you using sony genuine power adapter ? and please tell us your battery’s full charge capacity and current capacity ? using hwmonitor ? Please go to this page to find out how to check your battery condition: https://www.pntbrother.com/how-to-check-laptop-computer-temperature-windows/
Thank you.
(this is my second comment- please answer me….) i have toshiba satellite, the same problem….
the only difference is that mine says 30% plugged in, charging….but not refilled, ie it stuck there in 30%….
i did the most of the steps/methods exept the last one (to drain totaly the battery)….
i followed some videos on youtube too, but nothing…
Let’s check your battery condition first. Go to this web page: https://www.pntbrother.com/how-to-check-laptop-computer-temperature-windows/ and please tell us your value in “Designed Capacity”, “Full Charge Capacity”, and “Current Capacity”.
Here the results :

sorry if my comment is distored, it’s not my fault
Okay. Looks like your battery is okay. How old is your laptop ? Let’s do the same steps again but this time, after you remove the Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery, shut down the laptop, then remove the laptop battery. Re-install the battery and turn on the laptop.
Thank you.
Is almost brand new, about a year….
as i said i did all these steps before…..however i tried again (uninstall the drivers , install them back again….etc…) , i tried to update driver software, too . I checked if there are any drivers to upgrade , i checked also the charger (if it is worn…etc)…
i don’t know maybe it’s a charger issue.
Then i tried with uninstall\remove microsoft ac adapter too and Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method battery. same steps, turn off laptop , remove battery, re-install it etc (by the way , Windows installed all these items for me again automatically every time i boot my laptop)
The problem still exist……
Why don’t we drain the battery for re-calibration. Simply, you can drain the battery as much as possible (drain it until the laptop does not power up with the battery installed) After it, charge the battery fully and turn on again.
Thank you.
This works but its for a 1 time use. It doesnt fix the problem forever. You can only us it till it runs out completely. The. Begin the process again.
I did it, but nothing….
i drained my battery totaly till my laptop closed in itself , i started the charging but the charger was ” cold ” a long time , after one hour the charger wasn’t ”warm”…not at all (so it couldn’t charging it ) , the battery lamp (in front of laptop) is still red (not white) , so my battery is total ”dead” (now it’s 0% or 3%) and if i unpluge my laptop turns off immediately, ie i must have it plugged in always.
Finally i opened my laptop and battery was still 3% available and the same notice, plugged in, and charging….
maybe it’s my charger, because when i open my laptop it gets warm after a while, which means that it works half, it looks like it can gives ”power” to my laptop but it can not charge it.
If you do have universal laptop adapter at home, try it. If it does the same thing, then we better consider replacing battery or reinstalling the Windows.
Hi, I tried all things. My computer wont open unless the battery is plugged. Still, it shows that the battery is not charging but plugged. I wanna try out the remove the battery thing but my laptop’s battery isn’t user-replaceable. What do I do?
What is your laptop model ?
It’s ok , problem solved. I put a new charger to my laptop and now
the battery is charged…..( i found a universal adapter ,too)
eventually it was charger problem…..
thanks for support.
I have a PEAQ touchscreen tablet laptop running Window 8.1 on an Intel Celeron N2840 @ 2.16Ghz 2Gb 64bit
The battery is drained to 0% – it won’t start without being plugged in, and it dies immediately if I pull the charger cable out.
The laptop was purchased in July 2015.
I ran the HWMonitor software on it:
Designed Capacity 31220 mWh
Full Charge Capacity 30352 mWh
(Current Capacity does not show up at all)
I’ve tried all the steps you mentioned above except for the one about removing the battery – there’s no way to remove the battery from this particular model (and the ones mentioned in other articles, and on various videos) and nothing has worked.
Help?
Okay. It’s a new product, and probably you have one year warranty on it. Most of the electronic device manufacturer provide 1 year warranty for their products. Contact the manufacturer, and ask them to fix the problem. I would contact manufacturer if I have any problems on mine within 1 year.
My laptop is Lenovo Y510P about 1.5 years old currently running on windows 10. My laptop was on sleep mode for 2 days, last night i turned it on, battery shows 6%, plugged in the adapter,it was charging. Then i did battery gauge reset via the lenovo power management software, kept it idle over night. In the morning it wasn’t turning on and low battery indicator was blinking. I re-plugged the AC adapter, but not charging. Then i search the internet and tried almost all these tricks. Now my the situation is when i reinstall the battery it charges fine and the backup time is also good. But if I unplugged the AC adapter and replugged it then battery won’t charge. Then again I’ve to reinstall the battery to charge it.
I ran the HWMonitor software:
Hardware monitor ACPI
Temperature 0 n.a. [0xAAC] (TZ00)
Hardware monitor Battery
Voltage 0 12.46 Volts [0x30AE] (Current Voltage)
Capacity 0 62640 mWh [0xF4B0] (Designed Capacity)
Capacity 1 62250 mWh [0xF32A] (Full Charge Capacity)
Capacity 2 55950 mWh [0xDA8E] (Current Capacity)
Level 0 1 pc [0x63] (Wear Level)
Level 1 90 pc [0x59] (Charge Level)
Lastly, I’m not good in english, so please look over the mistakes and please help me…
Sometimes, a bad power adapter can cause it. If possible, try it with a different power adapter.
My aspire E15 got charging problem , even I change battery and adapter the problem is same , when I connect adapter it shows that charging after 15 sec charging stop automatically I try both mathod I deleted battery software and another I leave my laptop in till dead nothing happen , give me some tips
In that case, you should perform a factory default. (or re-install Windows)
I have an hp laptop same problem weird I know
my acer aspire v5-171 is plugged in but not charging, I already tried uninstalling the ACPI compliant but nothing happened. when I unplug the charger while my laptop is on, it automatically shuts down. is it the battery?
How old is your laptop ?
Let’s check your battery condition first. Go to this web page: https://www.pntbrother.com/how-to-check-laptop-computer-temperature-windows/ and please tell us your value in “Designed Capacity”, “Full Charge Capacity”, and “Current Capacity”.
Hello Im using ASUS X450LA-W120H I tried all these steps but still not working. how can I fix it? this is brand new.how would I know if its the battery has problem?
I´m using a Toshiba Kira i7 which is around 1 year old but was without use a couple of months. Now the icon in the bar show ´Plugged in and not charging´. I tried several ways, including returning the PC to the original Windows 8.1 Pro, and again upgrade to Windows 10 Pro, but the problem continue. After uninstalled the “Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery”, and drained complete the battery I did a ´reset´ pressing the power button for more than 30 sec. because in this model is not possible take out the battery. Now the icon show: ¨Plugged in and charging¨ but won´t show the percent of the charge.
When ´is not charging´ the laptop will shutdown in the moment I disconnect the AC. When ´is charging´ the laptop work in battery for several hours, but shutdown abruptly when the battery drain because the OS don´t know the battery status.
For get the battery charging again, I must again repeat all the process (Uninstall the driver, drain, reset).
Some idea how to fix it?
Thank you in advance and great blog
Go to your model information on Toshiba website, and make sure if they have any battery related drivers. If you find something, try to install the driver.
Hi Hedel.
Did you fixed the problem? I’ve a equal computer (Kira) and I have exactly the same problem. Today morning in an assistance office, I removed the battery (disconnect internally) and it works… just plugged. Before replace the battery, please tell me if you solved your problem and how.
Thanks
I tried two power adapters and several outlets in different rooms/locations. My computer wouldn’t charge. I came across your site and I uninstalled the Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery and shut down my laptop. I then removed the battery and put it back in. It’s charging again! Yay. Thank you. I think once it’s fully charged I’m going to drain the battery and fully charge it again. Might be overkill but right now I’m just glad it’s finally charging again.
I have a Dell Latitude 6410 and all the solutions mentioned fail for me. I even have Linux Mint installed on my system (Dual Boot option) side by side with Windows. Regardless of what system I am on, the laptop will not charge the battery. I even bought a new battery and have used a new charger and it still does not work. Very frustrating. I am at the point where I will either have to buy a new computer, buy an external battery charger, or delegate this computer to be solely a desktop.
I have same model, same problem. Did you ever find a fix?
HI I’m using Toshiba Satellite A-660, lately i bought a new battery and it worked well. Suddenly it stopped charging it’s stuck on specific percentage like (17% plugged in, charging) but as soon as i unplug the power adapter the laptop shutdown.
So it’s definitely not charging, i already tried to uninstall the Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery. but still not charging.
Any help please ?!
Try to drain the battery and a do full charge. Read this blog post: https://www.pntbrother.com/how-to-maintain-increase-lifespan-of-laptop-smartphone-battery/
Hi. I have a Toshiba laptop and I bought a replacement battery recently. Apparently I wasn’t supposed to let it drain down to 0% and now it won’t turn on whether the adapter is plugged in or not. What do I do?
Hi! I had the problem of my laptop battery not charging when plugged. Although I didn.t post the problem. But I just applied your solution and it really works for my Laptop Toshiba Satellite C655 (which clocked 4years this year at March 16 ). Thank you so much and am grateful!
plugged in not charging
Normally my laptop shows orange light on charging but this time when I plugged in for charging it is showing blinking orange light and not charging.
You should check the battery efficiency. https://www.pntbrother.com/how-to-check-cpu-temperature-in-windows-10-8-7-vista-xp/ go to this page and use hwmonitor to check your battery life. Thank you.
when my laptop gets charge it shows red light on charging , but this time showing white light ( white light shows fully charged) and not charging .I applied all above method which you mentioned but still my laptop is not taking charge and showing 0% charging (plugged in, not charging)
Hi there Guys, I have a problem with my two year old Acer Aspire E5-523 with windows 10. It will not power up and no led lights are on. I cannot hear the fan spinning nor hear any sound indicating that it might fire up. I tried everything that has been suggested online but nothing works. I looked for the BIOS Battery but the laptop does not appear to have one. Could it have a capacitor instead and how can I tell and where would I find it on the motherboard. Also how will I know if its blown? Help please. Tom
